This writer does not disappoint. Each scene is compelling and each ending is an emotional jolt. Herbert's clarity and ruthless honesty about her family invites the reader to explore a deeper understanding of her own life. Powerful!
This selection of Spare Scenes written by Gillian Herbert is a must read. Gillian is a master at 'tight and clean' writing. Gillian's exploration of her family history is fascinating; with each story you walk into her world, a life that takes you from England, to Egypt, and home again. I love the British flavor, the referenced 'cup of tea' and 'digestive biscuits' that put you right in the family living room. The relationship between Gillian, her mother, and her father resonate with heartfelt issues that clearly changed lives and marked their future. I recommend Gillian's book to anyone who loves memoir, short stories, and even British history.
Gillian Herbert’s Spare Scenes is a tour de force of spare, elegant writing. Only a fine writer could turn the stuff of everyday British family life into an absorbing account that reads as compellingly as a mystery. At the heart of the narrative are family secrets, the proverbial elephant in the living room, that belie the staid stability of their proper English home. Equally, the book provides a window into an era of British history and social mores that is both heartening and disturbing. Herbert’s lean prose packs a wallop!
I am not one for this type of story or non-fiction, but I have to admit that despite all that, this story pulled me in and tore at my heart. Especially the ending. I'm still getting teary eyed just thinking about it.
I don't want to say this was a harsh light on the reality of her life..but rather just a window showing moments of the author's life that just were. Whether they were happy, sad, angry...full of despair, unfairness, or softness.
We can come to see the effects it had on her and her own understandings of things that happened, misunderstandings or/and assumptions of emotions, actions, etc that these memorable moments had on her.
Again, I don't usually read these type of stories (fiction or not) but I have to say that in total of the few I have read, reflection upon the past without painting or tainting it with absolute bitterness or want of happier times is hard to do but I felt the author did it wonderfully, while still showing us who she was and is today.
I'll probably not re-read this (because it isn't my type of book), but it is something I'd still recommend.
