An Old Man Love eBook Anthony Trollope

I've read almost of Trollope and liked almost all and loved many. I liked this one but didn't love it--meaning I won't want to reread it although I'm glad I did read it once. Usually I relish Trollope's humorous characters, but Mrs. Baggett and her husband, two of the humorous ones, failed to amuse me. The young, enthusiastic, soon to be married clergyman, however, did amuse me, as did his less enthusiastic bride-to-be. The story was a page-turner for me--I was very anxious to know what was going to happen in the end. The two main characters made you care about them.

If you have never read Trollope, this wouldn't be the best intro to him, but if you like Trollope in general, I think you will like this one, too. However, it lacks the interesting cultural and political background details that enrich Trollope's best books, and it lacks the deliciously wicked villain or villains that he usually supplies. There simply isn't as much to the story as I've come to expect from Trollope. And although I did love the main characters, I didn't love them nearly as much as I have loved some other Trollope characters. Still, I enjoyed it and got something of value from it, so I do recommend it.

An Old Man Love eBook Anthony Trollope Reviews

Well written; interesting. I enjoyed this book so much that I could not stop reading it when I had come to the last half!
Trollope shows how to do our duty, but how to do our duty in a way that does not take on more trouble for self then God or his law would demand.
I own just about every book by Wilkie Collins and this is one of my favorites. He is one of my favorite authors. His stories are SO entertaining. The kind of books that I can't wait to get back to if I have to put it down.

If you like Wilkie Collins writing I also recommend any book by Anthony Trollope. He was a wonderful writer in the same style of writing. I have all of his books too!!

Catherine Cookson is another great story teller. She recently passed away so she was not from the same era as the other two writers. Her books are unforgetable!!
Simple. Sweet. Easy read. Typical Trollope but with less detailed scenery than most. This one is people centered, expressing the character's emotions. You'll be "pulling" for the "right" decision before the end arrives.
Great book.
Not Trollope's best novel (it was his final one) but it's a fascinating psychological exploration of a triangular relationship in which the younger man wins out over the older one in the marriage stakes. We are led to sympathise with Mr. Whittlestaff, the "old man" (only aged 50!) as Trollope delves into his thoughts and feelings as he sadly relinquishes his beloved Mary.
A little disappointing. Trollope was in failing health when he wrote this, and had to dictate a good portion of it. I had expected a profounder examination of the themes of Renunciation and Resignation, but instead got a somewhat annoying heroine and precious little philosophizing on the author's part. There are a few powerful passages toward the end, as Wittlestaff wrenches himself into giving up the girl, and one almost feels his agony. It's a portrait of love and heroism that is painted in surprisingly cool colors, weak outlines, and with a tepid approach.
